About:
Third Order Carmelites, now called Lay Carmelites, are not a society in the secular sense. They are a true branch of the Carmelite Order.
Lay Carmelites (historically known as the Third Order) are lay people who, in response to a special call from God, freely and deliberately promise to live the evangelical life in the spirit of the Carmelite Order and under its direction. Within their state in life, they seek to live in the presence of God 24 hours a day. In fact, the entire Carmelite family, in its task of living out its consecration to Christ, seeks to live in the presence of the living and true God who, in the person of Christ, lives in our midst; it is a family that seeks divine intimacy.
Lay Carmelites, imbued with the spirit of the Order, try to live its charism in a silent listening to the Word, making their whole life a prayer by allowing themselves to be caught up by the Spirit for the wonderful works that God accomplishes and which require their committment and worthwhile contribution.
Lay Carmelites, according to the constant tradition of Carmel, are to culivate in the greatest degree possible prayer in all its forms: mental prayer and aspirational prayer, as well as the traditional practices. Above all they should learn from the Virgin how to praise the Lord and to rejoice in God their Savior in their ordinary daily life.
The Saint Rita Society is a women’s group that meets monthly for prayer and service, socialization, information, education and spiritual growth. This group provides many helpful support services to the parish and local community.
The Holy Name Society is committed to helping its members grow in holiness through devotion to the most Holy Name of Jesus. Members of this fraternity are called to be leaders, to cleanse themselves in the sacrament of penance, strengthen themselves with the most Holy Eucharist, nourish their souls on Sacred Scripture, increase their desire for divine love through prayer, and lead their families, friends and coworkers to Christ Jesus by their acts of charity and piety.
The Confraternity of the Most Holy Names of God and Jesus (Holy Name Society) promotes reverence for the Sacred Names of God and Jesus Christ, obedience and loyalty to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, and the personal sanctification and holiness of its members. Members are called to contribute to the evangelization mission of the Church and to make perpetual acts of reverence and love for our Lord and Savior. The apostolate of the society is to assist in parish ministries by performing the Corporal Works of Mercy: to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, give drink to the thirsty, shelter to the homeless, tend the sick, visit those in prison, and bury the dead; as well as the Spiritual Works of Mercy: to convert sinners, instruct the ignorant, counsel the wayward, comfort the sorrowing, bear adversity patiently, forgive offenses, and pray for the living and the dead.
If you are a Catholic male over the age of 18, please consider joining the Holy Name Society - join your prayers with others so that the Most Holy Name of Jesus can be venerated - our prayers will be heard!
THINKING OF BECOMING A CATHOLIC…
…or is someone you know thinking of it? If so, then the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the right step for you to take. The RCIA is a process that consists of a combination of participation at Sunday Mass and instruction on the teachings and customs of the Roman Catholic Church. RCIA is also for baptized Catholics who have not received both First Holy Communion and Confirmation. The sessions meet once a week on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. in the Rectory. Adults that have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation are also invited to join our sessions. If you are seriously thinking of entering this program, please call the Rectory at 718-384-0223 and ask for Rosemarie Walsh.

EMHC serve one of the most important ministries in the parish: actually bringing Jesus to others, by visiting the homebound and those confined to nursing homes or hospitals (Pastoral Care), and by giving Communion at Mass. They bring the assurance of God’s love to those who suffer. They go to visit not as individuals in one to one undertaking but as members of an entire body of believers whose prayer supports their ministry. It is a mission, a sending forth, to those who bear the burden of bodies, mind and spirit.
More than a volunteer service, this is an actual ministry that requires a one-day diocesan-sponsored training session.
Serving as an EMHC is a wonderfully rewarding ministry that can bring graces and blessings while also bringing the Body of Christ to our brothers and sisters homebound. If interested please contact Judy Coccia at 718-384-0223 ext 22.
Lectors serve as readers of the sacred scriptures at Mass every Sunday. If you are interested in becoming a Lector, please contact Lucille Aponte at the Recotry.
Altar Servers recieve the privledge of assisting the clergy at the celebration of Mass. They assist in all matters on the Altar.
Outside of Mass, Altar Servers lead processions, serving as the first members of the Parish the community see as the Statue of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel passes people in the street on July 16.
For more information on becoming an Altar Server, please contact Dan Mace in the rectory.
Ushers care for the members of the Parish each Sunday by welcoming them as well as new members of the Parish and vistors. The help the Communion process by managing the line and seeing that everyone is taken care of and safe.
For more info on becoming an Usher, call the rectory.
THE FOLK GROUP sings every Sunday at the 10am Family Mass. The goup consists of singers, a pianist and guitarists. They also play at the 5pm Family Mass of Christmas Eve. The Folk Group is led by Music Director, Richard Slizeski.
THE ITALIAN CHOIR sings at the 11:15am Italian Mass every Sunday. The choir is led by Pianist, DIego Tornelli
THE FESTIVE CHOIR is a combined choir that consists of members of the Folk Group, the Italoan Choir and other singers who join the groups on special occassions and holidays such as Holy Week, the Feast Masses and Christmas Midnight Mass.
For information on joining any of the choirs, please contact Richard Slizeski at the Rectory.
Confessions are heard every Saturday 4:00- 4:45PM (before the 5pm Mass).
Any other time, call the Rectory for an appointment with one of the priests.
If you desire to have your child baptized into the Catholic Christian Faith, you are asked to call the Rectory for an appointment. Baptisms are celebrated twice monthly (except in July) - a class prior to the Celebration is required. Children 7 years
& older prepare for Baptism by attending Religious Instructions.
Couples are to make arrangements at the Rectory eight months before the Marriage. Both parties must see the priest. All couples must attend the Pre-Cana program. Log onto www.precana.org for introductory session.
Call the Rectory for more information
The Sacrament of Annointing of the Sick is celebrated monthly at one of the weekend Masses. Urgent calls are responded to at any time. If there is someone sick at home, please contact one of the priests to administer the sacrament at home. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are also available to bring Holy Communinion.
The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) provides religious education to children of Catholic parents attending secular schools. These classes not only educate children about Jesus and the Catholic faith but prepare children to receive the sacraments of Penance, Holy Communion, and Confirmation.
If you are interested in signing up for Religious Education, please contact Director of Religious Education, Rosemarie Walsh at EXT. 28

Dear Friends,
For 125 years the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel has been more than a parish Church. It has been the center of the community - touching the hearts and souls of many generations. This anniversary acknowledges the century and a quarter that this shrine has been the custodian of faith & tradition but it celebrates so much more. As our anniversary motto says, "We are Alive in Faith and Tradition." We remember the past as we look to the future, to the generations who still long for the message of hope Mt. Carmel proclaims.
Included on this site, you will see a list of activities and events that give you the opportunity to be part of this historical celebration. Be assured that, as has always been true, at Mt. Carmel all are welcome.
Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. Msgr. Joseph P. Calise
Pastor
It is indeed a privledge for me to have been given this honor to serve as the General Chairperson of the 125th Anniversary of our religious home, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Shrine Church. The committee is busy planning many events, as you can see from the list of events already in place. We will begin this special year on Sunday, November 13, 2011 with an opening Mass at 11am. I hope you will join us for many of these events. There are still some more to be included. It will be an opportunity for you to spend time with old friends and acquaintances, especially if you are no longer a part of Mt. Carmel Parish. Hopefully, it will bring many of you "home," and give you a feeling of renewal. If you are a newcomer to our Parish, please come and celebrate this auspicious occasion with us. Share this informaton with everyone you know who would be interested. Our doors are opent to all!
We are all anxiously looking forward to this 125th Anniversary year, and hope you are too. Come and be a part of it!
Sincerely,
Sylvia Summa
